Starters Giveaway!

I am so pleased to have Lissa Price on the blog today talking about her book, Starters. It is a very compelling, exciting and creative book that I absolutely loved.  It was also just nominated for a YALSA Award for Best Fiction for Young Adults!  If you haven’t picked up this book, you are missing out.

Here is a little bit about Starters:

Starters
Author: Lissa Price
Genre: Young Adult
Format: ARC
Publisher: Random House
Release Date: 3-13-12
Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie’s only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man. He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie’s head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator’s grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations’ plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. – Goodreads

Lissa Price’s debut YA novel STARTERS, a futuristic thriller, was called “a smart, swift, inventive, altogether gripping story,” by Dean Koontz. The LA Times said it is “Dystopian sci-fi at its best,” and “Readers who have been waiting for a worthy successor to… ‘The Hunger Games’ will find it here.”  She has lived in Japan and India, but now resides in the Southern California foothills with her husband and the occasional deer.

How did you get the idea for Starters?
I was trying to get a flu shot and they only had a limited number. They set up a system where only the very young and the very old and the infirm could get the shot first. I thought if this were a killer flu, it would be a strange world with only the most vulnerable members of society left alive.
A lot of YA books feature kids who have lost their parents or caregivers.  Why do think that is such an appealing aspect of a story?
It’s also common in many fairy tales and fables. By taking away that support system, the pressure is on your main character to fend for herself. It raises the stakes.
If you met Callie in person, what would she think of you?
Hah!  She’d think I work too hard!
If you could “rent” someone for the day, who would it be?
My answer to that one changes all the time. It might be fun to be in a great singer’s body for a day – Adele or Florence (and the Machine).
What are you working on now? Any new projects?
I’m on a rewrite draft of ENDERS. I just finished the second e-short set in the world of STARTERS, called “Starters: Portrait of a Marshal” – I love this story (comes out in July).  In the back of my head, I’m working on a totally new idea for a new series. But mainly my focus now is making ENDERS the way I want it to be – with twist and turns, emotions, adventure and surprises.

I’m reading this one right now, and loving it. It’s seriously creepy, but in a very realistic, this-could-totally-happen kind of way. Who knew that a flu shot could be such an inspiration?!

    Thanks for the giveaway!
