Feature and Follow Friday!

Welcome to another Follow and Feature Friday hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read  The feature bloggers this week are Lauren Gets Literal and Fic Book Reviews.

What is your biggest Pet peeve when it comes to books?

I can handle the love triangles and the stereotypical bad guys, but the thing that sets my teeth on edge in a YA novel is bad teen dialogue.  As a writer, it must be hard writing a character that is 15 to 20 years younger than you are.  I find that sometimes, there is a little bit of overcompensation and the way they let you know that a teenager is speaking is by using too much slang.  Even worse is when the slang is at least 10 years out of date.  I am not a teenager, but I know many teens and while slang is certainly a part of their vocabulary, they also mostly speak like intelligent human beings.  Nothing ruins a story more than calling someone “babelicous” (seriously, when is the last time you heard someone say that in earnest?)  or an unironic “cowabunga, dude”.  It really takes me out of the story and ruins the experience of reading.

  1. Mwahaha! Yes! J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhoos books cracked me up with their slang.

And affected teen-speak drives me nuts. It nearly stopped me from reading A Touch Of Frost (like, whatever, you know?), which I wound up really enjoying.

    Great answers 😀

  2. The only person who pulls this off and it doesn’t bother me is J.R. Ward (which is most definitely not YA lol). The only reason it doesn’t bother me is because I think she is awesome, but anyone else and it just doesn’t work for me!

I love your book tree in your header!

  3. That’s funny about the dialogue. Try working with kids and hearing them speak. It drives me crazy. I could never write YA because of that. I’m not up on the lingo and it changes so quickly.

I agree with you completely on the dialogue front. I’ve just read a book where a pair of teen siblings kept calling each other “sis” and “bro”. That does not happen!

Great answer! I’m a new follower. My FF Post

  5. Peace in relation to the spiritual path is an awesome place, not to mention good begin for just about any healing that one wants. Whenever everyone of us gives our own spiritual path/truth with another individual, it helps make our trip all of the sweeter.
