I have been blogging since 2007 or so, but I never really thought about networking outside of the blogosphere. When I started my book blog a year ago, I soon found out that reaching out from the computer and interacting in real life is almost a requirement if you want to go the extra mile with your blog. Luckily, I live in Texas and I must say, as the risk of sounding biased, that the book blogging community in this state is fantastic. The first time I met other book bloggers was at a dinner the night before the Austin Teen Book Festival. Jen Bigheart, Cari, Girls In The Stacks and Tillie were friendly and wonderful. I had a great time and immediately felt like I was amongst friends.
I live in Houston, and we have a pretty tightly knit group. I see the same bloggers at signings and since there are really only two indies that regularly host signings (Blue Willow and Murder By The Book) I have gotten to know the book sellers, as well. I have been pleasantly surprised by how friendly and supportive everyone has been. The thing is, I think that authors can sense when there is a good book community on a town, and bloggers really set the tone, in my opinion. It all goes back to my little spiel about being supportive: there is s such a thing as blogging karma, and if you can really reach out to your local bloggers and booksellers and create a positive community, you will bring good things into your life and to your blog. In this case, I think that networking has turned into friendship and I am very grateful for that!
