I am always wary of reading books that deal with parenthood because the thought of anything happening to a child is too hard to read. However, I knew that this author had many very loyal fans, so I picked it up and was so glad that I decided to give it a chance! I was surprised that this turned out to be more than a father who has gone to desperate measures to secure a good future for his daughter. It was more of a story about group people, all broken in their own way, trying to come to grips with their situations and how Bella has a big part in doing just that.
Travis is impossibly young and has the world on his shoulders after his situation with work and a home fall apart. My heart broke for him as I imagined what it would be like to not know where your next meal was coming from. A chance meeting at a coffee shop brings Erin into Travis and Bella’s life and through the chapters told from her point of view, we learn of the terrible loss that she has suffered. The intersection of their lives and the struggle that Travis has with his estrangement from Bella’s mother comes together to produce a heart wrenching and suspenseful book. Travis wants nothing more than to provide a good life for Bella, but his choices are limited and not always good. If you are an established fan of Diane Chamberlain or, like me, new to her work, you will be pleased with this extremely emotional story.
I received this book as a galley from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
