Mia’s ordinary life is disrupted in the most horrifying way possible when she is possessed by a hungry and powerful demon–and only saved by the arrival of relatives from Italy, the country her grandfather fled many decades ago. Now her cousins Emilio and Giuliano say the only way to keep her safe is for her to come back with them to Milan, to live, to learn Italian, to fall in and out of love, and to master the family trade: fighting all demons with the lore of bell, book, and candle. Milan is not what Mia expected, but it will change her forever, in this stunningly well-written novel about an American girl who, fleeing an ancient evil, finds her only salvation in her ancestral home. – Goodreads

Mia finds out about her family’s interesting past, not from her father, but because she is possessed by a demon.  Her possession at the beginning of the book throws the reader headfirst into a very interesting world full of demons, devil worshipers, ghosts and the people who catch them.  Without knowledge of Italian or any real idea of what she is getting into Mia goes to Milan.  The descriptions of the city were vivid and obviously written by someone who loves it.  Mia’s eccentric family is fun to read and, I’m not going to lie, I think I might have picked up some Italian after reading this book.

It can be argued that perhaps the idea of demons has flooded the book market, but I thought that this story had a unique spin on an old idea.  Mia dies not arrive and speak fluent, perfect Italian.  She feels isolated and  homesick, but she works hard to learn the language, the culture and about her family’s tragic past.  The demon that possessed her is not done with Mia, yet, and I found myself a little freaked out when I stayed up late reading the book.  Although the ending seemed a little rushed, I think that in the first book of any series, world building is essential and that is where The Demon Catchers of Milan excelled.  It is our world, but with a dark corner that you might not otherwise notice.  It was a unique and entertaining story and I think that there will be many people waiting anxiously for book two.
