Spellcaster by Cara Lynn Shultz

This is a review of the second book in the Spellbound series.  If you haven’t read the first book, you might want to skip this review. You can find my review of Spellbound here.

Author: Cara Lynn Shultz
Genre: Young Adult
Format: ebook
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release Date: 3-27-12
Emma and Brendan thought their troubles would be over once the curse was broken.  Now that they can be “normal” and Emma can continue her witch studies, life is supposed to calm down.  When a dark figure from Brendan’s past starts stirring up trouble, Emma must use her new found powers to defend herself and save her relationship with her soul mate.

After everything they went through to be together, Emma and Brendan are hoping that they can be somewhat normal high school students.  Oh, but you knew they weren’t going to get off that easy!  Spellcaster picks up the storyline of Emma’s magical powers and gives her even more ways to prove that she is a kick butt heroine.  We get to learn a little more about Emma and Brendan as a couple, and that includes some of the not as nice parts of Brendan’s past.  It’s that past that ends up causing most of the conflict in the book.  One thins that was added to this book was a few chapters from Angelique’s point of view.  I was skeptical at first, but I ended up really enjoying her perspective, especially when she was dealing with Brendan, who she doesn’t really like.  It added a little bit of kick to the story and kept things moving.

I was disappointed that there wasn’t more of a follow up on the people that were so evil in the first book, but that was only because I wanted to see them really get punished, although the situation with Anthony does get resolved.  Much like Spellbound, Spellcaster is full of romance, action, fight scenes (both physical and magical) and lots of fun.  Emma is as snarky and hilarious as ever and Angelique is an awesome sidekick.  It was different than Spellbound since it focused on something other than the curse, but it was still a fun and entertaining read.  I think that those who loved the first book will be leased with this installment.

  1. Hmm, maybe I should give this series a try after all, Kate. The only thing I’d like to know is if there’s a love triangle involved. I’m off to investigate. 🙂
