When Cal Thompson came to New York City as a college freshman, he expected to enjoy the city and everything it had to offer.  When he is infected with a parasite by a mysterious woman, he find out that vampires are not the thing of legends, but rather the victims of an ancient disease.   After Cal unknowingly becomes a carrier, he must track down the women he’s infected and take them to quarantine.   Called “Peeps” by those that seek to control the population, these parasite positive females are located one by one until only the mysterious woman who infected him is left.

Scott Westerfeld is a highly respected author and I have heard nothing but good things about his books.  Peeps did not disappoint.  Instead of going the usual route with a vampire story, Westerfeld took the CSI path.  This book is part science book, park horror and 100% excellent.  Along with the witty dialogue and great story, it’s really funny and clever.  This quote gives you a good idea of the different take on vampires:

“The main thing to remember is that there’s no magic involved. No flying, no transforming into bats or rats either. We’re talking about a disease.”

Cal is lonely and miserable in his state of forced celibacy, but determined to find some purpose in the bad hand that he was dealt.  When he comes across Lacey, a charmingly nosy journalism student, and can’t seem to get rid of her, he finally lets someone in to his life.  This lonely bit of romance in the book is a perfect compliment to the hard truths that Cal faces every day.  The scientific facts blended into old legend make this unique story very enjoyable.   I gave this book 4 stars.
