Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom

Despite a somewhat campy meet cute between the Galen and Emma (I loved it), Of Poseidon weaves a story of two worlds colliding.  Galen is Syrena royalty and has leveraged his fascination with humans to becoming an ambassador of sorts who spends a fair amount of time on land.  Emma is clueless to her origins and the mystery of where Emma came from provides a lot of suspense and intrigue in the book.  The romance between Emma and Galen is deliciously torturous and sweet.  Galen has a sort of stiff, Mr. Darcy thing going on and it was fun to see him kind of loosen up as the book progressed.  I also loved the insight into Syrena culture that we see through Galen’s sister, Rayna, and her arranged marriage.

The world building in this story is strong.  Although I thought it missed some opportunities to dig  little deeper into the conflicts between humans and Syrena and what Emma’s existence could really mean for the race as a whole, it was still good world building and a story that I enjoyed.  The author really thought out the cultural distance between Syrena and humans and how navigating high school might be difficult for someone who was born and raised in the water.  Those moments, some of which were pretty funny, added to the appeal of this story.  In fact, there were several scenes in the book that made me laugh out loud.  The ending is one heck of a cliffhanger, so I will be waiting anxiously for book two!

I received this book as a galley from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

  1. Awesome review! This is another great book I have my eye on. At first I was honestly a little sceptical and unsure about the plot summary. But after reading your reviews and a few others, the book is officially going on my wishlist!
