Eliza dreams of being a playwright for the king’s theater, where she will be admired for her witty turns of phrase rather than her father’s wealth. Beth is beautiful as the day but poor as a church mouse, so she must marry well, despite her love for her childhood sweetheart. Zabby comes to England to further her scientific studies—and ends up saving the life of King Charles II. Soon her friendship with him becomes a dangerous, impossible obsession. Though she knows she should stay away from the young, handsome king, Charles has a new bride, Queen Catherine, and a queen needs ladies in waiting. And so Zabby, Beth, and Eliza, three Elizabeths from very different walks of life, find themselves at the center of the most scandal-filled court that England has ever seen. – Goodreads

With the court of King Charles II as the backdrop, the three Elizabeth’s are all trying to navigate their own lives while serving the queen.  It was an interesting time in English history as England recovered from a bloody civil war that resulted in the execution of Charles I and the undercurrent of religious conflict between the Church of England and the Catholic Church raged on.  I was very interested to read a YA book that all of the complicated history and showed a small part of it through the eyes of teenagers.

I liked the diverse interests and personalities that the three protagonists had, but a few aspects of the book weighed it down.  The constant switching back and forth between the three stories became a little confusing after a while.  I also thought that plots regarding the King’s mistresses could have been their own book and distracted from some of the other plot points.  While I appreciated the interests that each girl had and their desire to follow their dreams, I also found their interactions to be somewhat anachronistic.  I’m not sure I really buy the idea that a group of girls would band together to help a queen in a very precarious situation within a notoriously cut-throat court.  Despite that,  it was an entertaining book with lively characters and an interesting historical setting.

  1. Ooh historical fiction! I’ve never heard of this but the premise of court intrigue is always great. Also, an obsession? Hm! Switching back in POVs sometimes annoys me so I’m sorry this book didn’t do it well. I’m glad that overall it was an entertaining book though!

  2. From first glance at this book cover it wouldn’t seem as though it’s YA. It sounds pretty interesting minus the points you mentioned.

I always enjoy reading your reviews because you encompass such a wide variety of YA books. I always look forward to seeing what you’ve read next.
