Mallory killed her boyfriend, Brian. She can’t remember the details of that night but everyone knows it was self-defense, so she isn’t charged. But Mallory still feels Brian’s presence in her life. Is it all in her head? Or is it something more? In desperate need of a fresh start, Mallory is sent to Monroe, a fancy prep school where no one knows her . . . or anything about her past. But the feeling follows her, as do her secrets. Then, one of her new classmates turns up dead. As suspicion falls on Mallory, she must find a way to remember the details of both deadly nights so she can prove her innocence-to herself and others. – Goodreads

With a boarding school as a back-drop, Hysteria delivers a plot that is put together like a puzzle through flashbacks and with a window into the protagonist’s seemingly unstable mind.  It can be hard to pull off a narrator that seems unreliable, but Megan Miranda was able to paint a picture of a normal girl whose life takes a bizarre turn.  The gaps in Mallory’s memory only serve to heighten the mystery and I was constantly trying to figure out what could possibly be the actual series of events that brought Mallory and Brian to that fateful point in time.  This ended up being a very fast read because I didn’t want to put it down!

Megan Miranda clearly has a gift for psychological thrillers that keep you guessing.  With a plot that had elements of The Telltale Heart, Hysteria took you into Mallory’s mind while never really revealing her true memories until the very end.  Usually, I find that technique annoying, but it was so well done that I felt like I as actually in Mallory’s head.  I was riveted by the creepy feeling I had the entire time I was reading it and the way that I felt totally twisted up every time I thought I had it all figured out.  I also liked that while there was a little romance in it, I would say the primary relationship was with her friend, Colleen.  There was no “oh, come and rescue me” plot in this book.  In fact, Mallory does a good job of pushing most people away from her as she feels that she’s spiraling down into insanity.  I highly recommend this book for those that love stories that get into your head with a touch of murder and a lot of plot twists.

  1. I really need to get my review of this book up, because I want t spread the word. I thought it was really good. It certainly kept me turning pages far too late into the night. Great review. I like the parallels you drew with The Telltale Heart.

  2. Yay for boarding schools! I’ve heard mixed things about this but I’m so curious about the twists. It definitely sounds like a page turner!

  3. I totally agree! The memories and flashbacks were so well done! Often I can get frustrated with them, and just want to get back to the story. In Hysteria though, I craved those parts of the book. Great review!

  4. I love stories that are a bit of a mind bender, so this sounds perfect for me. I’ve seen mixed reviews, but overall people seem to enjoy it like you. Great review!

  5. I love the cover for this one. You seem to have enjoyed it a bit better than I did but I agree that I loved how her memories were slowly revealed and we really had no idea what REALLY happened until the end. Great review!

  6. wow your review has restored my faith in this book. I also love thrillers but I am wary of flashbacks. Like you, sometimes i find it annoying when an author holds back info from us but I’m glad you actually liked it here. and thank god, no damsel in distress kind of romance here!
