Annie and Julia grew up together.  Julia was the daughter of a wealthy San Fransisco family and Annie was the daughter of the cook and nanny.  They were the best of friends until and incident in high school ruined their friendship.  Ten years later, Julia is at a crossroads in her life and her idea to open a cupcake shop with Annie brings them together again, but not without bringing old hurts, as well.

This book switches back and forth between the perspectives of the two women, who after being estranged for many years, have been brought together once again.  The details of Julia and Annie’s history are slowly revealed through their different points of view and I think it added a little something extra to the story.  Neither woman was completely right or wrong and although their circumstances in life were very different, each had their own struggles which made them well developed as characters.  You were able to see Annie and Julia as real people; flawed, but ultimately good.  Their partnership started as something tentative and somewhat stressful until they were able to find the friendship the once had.  Julia’s secrets and Annie’s bitterness blinded them to the good things in their lives and I loved the realizations that they both had in the end.

Meg Donohue’s descriptions of the cupcakes are mouth watering.   It isn’t just the flavors of the food, but the passion that Annie has for baking and how it connects her to her mother.  While this book did have romance, it was more about friendships and how the past can either be something that changes you for the better, or drags you down into bitterness.  It was also about how time and some wisdom can change your perspective on past hurts.  It was an entertaining read, as sweet as the cupcakes in the title.

  1. That sounds like an awesome book! I’ve been a lot into dystopian and paranormal stories latetly, so I figured out it might be time for a change. So reading something contemporary like this seems to be a good idea. Your review is really good and I have to say that I am really interested in finding out what happened to Annie’s and Julia’s friendship and how it will develop in the future.

  2. Nice. For some reason I really have an affinity for books that have some kind of food theme. (Just read The School of Essential Ingredients and it was a great YA break!) And I appreciate books that really focus on friendship. This sounds like something I need to read. Thanks for the tip!
