When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life. Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email. Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy. – Goodreads

We meet Jacqueline one night as she’s leaving a party. Unfortunately, as she is leaving, she is almost raped. (Please note that this book does contain scenes describing sexual violence).  Thankfully, a good Samaritan stops the assault, but Jacqueline is now dealing with her Freshman year in college, being dumped by her long-time boyfriend and an attacker that keeps turning up like a bad penny.  I admit that I was frustrated with Jacqueline’s lack of action after the attack, but unfortunately I think that inaction is probably very realistic for a lot of young women.  As Jacqueline tries to rebuild her identity as a single college student, she meets Lucas and has email interactions with Landon, her tutor.  Both are intriguing guys and each helps her to see that she is still the same person she has always been.  She also finds the support she needs to bring her attacker to justice, but it is not an easy path for anyone involved.

There is a lot to like about Easy and I think that the New Adult genre has a lot to offer older teens and adults, alike.  This is a solid romance with a story that sexy, emotional and sweet.  I thought it captured the uncertainty of early college years very well, and I appreciated the tough time that Jacqueline went through when she realized how much she gave up for her ex-boyfriend.  The issue of sexual assault was addressed unflinchingly and I think it made the story very relevant.  The plot, which was a bit predicable at times, meandered in the middle and there were a lot of scenes and interactions that I felt were very repetitive. Overall, I thought it was a very entertaining read and I am looking forward to reading more books in this genre.

  1. Ooh, Easy! I really liked this book. I remember starting it one lazy Sunday morning and not being able to stop reading it until I was done.

  2. I loved this book! The only other indie book I’ve read is Secrets by Dawn Kirby. It’s another new adult book and I’m about 30% through it. (:

  3. Great review! This book is everywhere, including my own Nook, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I wasn’t aware of the sexual violence aspect, so thanks for including that. I’m still very interested to see what all the fuss is about.
